REVIEW
"Hong
Kong Trees: Omnibus Volume."
It
will be difficult to get your hands on this book if you are outside Hong
Kong. The Urban Council only sell their books through local outlets. Dr
Thrower provides a pretty thorough review of the main trees in Hong Kong,
and by inference in much of the tropical Asia Pacific region which would
be well worth the struggle of purchase though.
Each tree is photographed in foliage and the fruit or flowers. Often,
in keeping with the authors ideas, there are pictures of the bark which
are used in Hong Kong to identify trees whose full extent cannot often
be appreciated. Dr Thrower is an academic at the Chinese University of
Hong Kong, so also brings a precision and thoroughness to her work that
will be of interest to the specialist.
On a related foot-note of interest: at the time of writing, Hong Kong
has some 40% of land surface dedicated to national park so there is a
reasonably rich variety of trees in the book. (Only Bolivia has more land
space dedicated to forest than Hong Kong - although this is perhaps not
an overly impressive feat for Hong Kong, only 1,000 square-km total!)
